Breastfeeding: Building a Culture of Support and Success

Hey Mama,

Breastfeeding is so much more than just feeding your baby. It’s about connection, love, and being part of a tradition that’s been around for centuries. But let’s be real—it’s not always easy. Between figuring out latch, sleepless nights, and all the advice (wanted or not), it can feel overwhelming. That’s why having the right support and information can make all the difference. Let’s talk about how we can make breastfeeding feel a little more natural and a lot less lonely.

Breastfeeding is a Culture

Did you know that 150 years ago, lactation consultants weren’t even a thing? That’s because breastfeeding was just part of life. Moms learned how to nurse their babies by watching their own moms, aunts, and neighbors. It was a natural, everyday thing.

We can bring that culture back by making breastfeeding visible and normal. Breastfeeding in front of others—even little kids—helps them see that it’s just a normal part of life. And guess what? Boys who grow up around breastfeeding are more likely to support their partners if they decide to breastfeed. Talk about raising the next generation of supportive dads!

Support Makes All the Difference

Here’s the deal: when you have people in your corner who get it, breastfeeding gets a whole lot easier. Whether it’s your partner, mom, best friend, or even a lactation consultant, having someone to cheer you on is huge. But when your support system doesn’t know much about breastfeeding—or only knows bottle feeding—it can make things harder. Sometimes they’re just trying to help but end up giving advice that’s not quite right.

That’s where education comes in. Learning about the benefits of breastfeeding and the risks of formula feeding helps everyone understand why breastfeeding matters. For example, did you know formula feeding can increase the risk of infections, obesity, and even SIDS? Of course, formula can be a lifesaver when it’s needed, but knowing the risks helps us prioritize breastfeeding when it’s possible.

IBCLCs Are Lifesavers

If you hit a bump in the road—and let’s face it, most of us do—an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) can be your best friend. These folks are experts in everything breastfeeding, from latch issues to milk supply. And the best part? Most of them take insurance, so getting help might not cost you much, if anything. Whether they come to your house or you visit them in their office, they’re there to help you figure it all out.

Breaking the Bottle Culture Cycle

If you didn’t grow up around breastfeeding, it’s okay. You can still build that culture for your own family. Start by learning all you can about breastfeeding and sharing that knowledge with your partner and anyone else supporting you. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from an IBCLC. The truth is, when breastfeeding feels unfamiliar or hard, it’s easy to fall back on what’s more familiar, like bottles. But with the right support, you’ve got this.

At Natural Beginnings, we know every mom’s journey is different. Whether you’re dealing with a tricky latch, feeding in the middle of chaos (hello, toddlers!), or just need someone to tell you you’re doing an amazing job, we’re here for you. Mama, you’re not alone. Together, we can bring back the breastfeeding culture and make this journey a little easier for everyone. If you need a hand, don’t hesitate to reach out. You’ve got this, and we’ve got you.
